SURGICAL TRAINING SESSION IN BURNS TREATMENT

A highlight of this two-month period was the visit of plastic surgeon Dr Tim Cooper and burns specialist Dr Mark Duncan-Smith from Perth, Western Australia, who conducted a four-day training session for Balinese medical personnel focusing on the surgical treatment of extensive burns scarring.

Twelve patients, mainly from the eastern islands of Indonesia, were operated in the surgical session. The patients were located, transported to Bali with their families, accommodated and supported during the pre-operative period and also for a lengthy post-operative period by the Kolewa Foundation, with which JFF partnered in this program.

Five young children with cleft deformities were also operated in this surgical training session.

JFF thanks donors Faryar Gorgy and Gary Dempsey for their generous support of this program, the Kolewa Foundation and the staff and management of Rumah Sakit Puri Raharja, Denpasar for their cooperation and assistance.
