JFF AUSTRALIA

Professor William Morgan

Chair
Professor William Morgan is a Glaucoma subspecialist (MB BS, FRANZCO) with a PhD in optic nerve physiology, past Managing Director of the Lions Eye Institute, and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia. 

Bill has worked with the JFF since 2005 and joined the JFF Board in April 2020 and was appointed Chair in May 2023 when David Miller stepped down from the role. He has been teaching clinical and surgical techniques in Indonesia for over 20 years and is visiting professor at both the University of Udayana (Bali) and University of Indonesia (Jakarta).

Bill has a clinical and research interest in glaucoma surgery and the teaching of drainage surgery techniques generally, particularly in Indonesia. He is also the co-inventor of the Virna GDD, glaucoma drainage device now manufactured and used across Indonesia. 

Allison Manners

Deputy Chair
Allison was appointed to the JFF Board in April 2020 and became Deputy Chair in 2021. She brings 13 years of diverse business experience including strategic planning, operations, governance and management. 

Allison founded a property management company in 2004 and following its sale in 2017, continued work for the next two years as a business coach to small and medium enterprises. Since this time, Allison has committed her time to not-for-profit organisations. Allison graduated from Curtin University of Technology (WA) in 1988 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) and worked as a physiotherapist in various countries for 16 years before moving into corporate business. Previous board roles include the Australian Short Term Rental Association (previously HRIA), where Allison was Chair and Vice Chair over a four-year period. Allison looks forward to continuing to contribute her experience toward the Foundation and is constantly inspired by the incredible work of the John Fawcett Foundation team.
Sally Grice

Treasurer
Sally was appointed to the Board as Treasurer in May 2023. Sally is a retired chartered accountant who worked as a CFO for most of her career. She is currently treasurer or president of several not-for-profit organisations and has extensive financial and general management experience.

Sally was attracted to the JFF Board by the enthusiastic and skilled members already on the Board, and the stability of the organisation and its history. She hopes to further improve the organisation’s reporting, recording and analysis procedures, and support planning and fundraising efforts.
David Miller OAM

Secretary
David was appointed to the JFF Board in 2017 and became Deputy Chair in 2020, then Chair in 2021, a position he held until May 2023, when he took on the position of Secretary. David attended Perth’s Christchurch Grammar School, graduated in Law from the University of Western Australia in 1974 and was admitted as a lawyer in 1975.

From 1980 to 2015 David was a partner of the law firm Kott Gunning. David was a member of the Real Estate and Business Agents Supervisory Board from 1983 to 1997 and was its Chair for 11 years. He was a director of the Western Australian Hockey Association for 16 years and is a life member of UWA Hockey Club. David is a member of the Dalkeith Rotary Club, where he met Win Jones and became aware of the marvellous work undertaken by the Foundation.
Winston Jones OAM
Board Member Win was born in Wales in 1939 and migrated to Australia with his family in 1952. His career comprised 22 years in banking (1955 – 1977) and 30 years as a small business proprietor (1977 – 2007).

Win has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Dalkeith since 1987. In 1991 he became involved in the Rotary Project, ‘Bali Eye Clinic’, and worked with the Management Committee until the formation of The John Fawcett Foundation (JFF) in 2000.

In 1996 he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship and in 2002 received a ‘Sapphire Pin’ attachment to the award. His wife, Margaret, also received both awards. In 2008 Win received a Rotary Service Above Self award, one of only 150 such awards granted annually worldwide. In 2018 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM). These awards are all in recognition of the work done for Bali Eye Clinic/The John Fawcett Foundation over the years.

Win joined the JFF Board in 2002. Following their retirement in 2007, Win and Margaret increased their involvement in the Foundation, and have been regular and frequent visitors to Bali. From 2010 to 2012 Win served as temporary Chair following the resignation of the Chairman, and in 2015 was elected Chair of the Foundation and continued in that role until 2021. Since that time, Win has served as a Board member of the Foundation. He looks forward to continuing to assist the people of Indonesia for many more years.

Kylie Harrison

Board Member
Kylie Harrison was appointed to JFF Board in May 2015 after having become increasingly involved with JFF since first visiting Bali in 2010 with her partner, Dr Timothy Cooper, who assisted with the Children’s Corrective Surgery Project. Over the years she witnessed firsthand what the foundation is capable of achieving and was profoundly influenced by its founder, John Fawcett.

Kylie has a background in business development, sales and marketing and has a particular interest in developing promotion of the Foundation through social media.  She has worked in the finance sector, health care and business consulting. She has previous philanthropic experience, having contributed to fundraising projects with The John Fawcett Foundation, Rotary and Autism Australia.

Gede Bingin

Board Member
Gede, as Chair of JFFI and Executive Manager of the Bali office, represents the John Fawcett Foundation Indonesia on the JFFA Board.

Gede Bingin was born in the village of Datah, Karangasem, Bali, and is one of the two founding staff members of the Indonesian Foundation.  He was the first Balinese student to attend a term at Helena College, Western Australia, a JFF program that celebrated its 20th year in 2015. Gede held the position of Administration Manager / HRD of in the Bali office of JFF for many years. Since October 2017 he has held the position of Executive Manager, with full responsibility for the Bali office and JFF projects. Gede’s additional tasks include maintaining the computing and communication systems in the Bali office, and meeting and greeting guests and donors who visit the Bali office, sometimes accompanying them on village programs. He has made several visits to Australia, accompanying children requiring medical treatment and to attend Foundation meetings.

Norbert Hoegerl OAM

Board Member
Norbert brings to the JFF Board a wealth of experience with ophthalmic equipment through his training as a precision engineer and experience working with Carl Zeiss in Germany, Hong Kong, Macau and Melbourne.   

In 1996 he started his own company, MicroMed International, which specialises in the development of surgical microscopes used in all microsurgical disciplines with an emphasis on ophthalmology. In 1996 he started working with John Fawcett developing an ophthalmic surgical microscope that could be used in a mobile eye clinic, and in 2001 began volunteering as a biomedical engineer for the East Timor Eye Program with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Norbert has trained two Timorese biomedical engineers, and in 2017 built the first mobile eye clinic in East Timor. Norbert has made many trips to Bali to work with JFF’s medical technician, Dewa Putu, training him in the repair and maintenance of surgical microscopes. Dewa has also spent time in Australia working with Norbert. Norbert was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his humanitarian efforts in Bali and East Timor in 2016.

Dr dr AA Mas Putrawati Triningrat SpM(K)

Board Member
Dr Mas, who joined the JFF Board in May 2023, is a Balinese ophthalmologist, lecturer and researcher, Coordinator of the Ophthalmology Study Program and Vice-Chair of Research Ethics Committee in the Faculty of Medicine Udayana University Bali.

Dr Mas’s contribution will be to help strengthen links for JFF especially with relevant academic institutions in Bali and to provide feedback and suggestions for particular issues and data, and updated policies concerning eye health regulations in Indonesia. Other positions held: Head, International Relationship Department Indonesian Ophthalmology Association, Head, Commission for Certification, Indonesian Ophthalmology Collegium and Assessor in National Accreditation for Health Higher Education. Dr Mas is also active as an academic journal reviewer, national and international course and training related ophthalmology including the Leadership Development Program (LDP) from APAO (Asia Pacific Academy Ophthalmology).

Fiona Berger

Board Member
Fiona was appointed to the JFF Board in May 2023 after becoming increasingly involved with JFF through her husband, Bill Morgan. Following numerous trips to Bali and involvement with JFF staff and management, it became clear that she was becoming a keen ‘unofficial’ Board member, willing to devote time and energy to the organisation.

Fiona is a registered nurse, having spent most of her life working in Western Australian country hospitals, and has been acting Director of Nursing Katanning Regional Hospital and Albany Hospital theatre floor manager. Her roles have involved extensive nurse and hospital practice management. Fiona is a company director on a large farm in south-west Australia and has an interest in equity, governance and management. Fiona is keen to assist JFF’s sight-saving work develop greater scale in Bali and Indonesia.

Dr Joos Meyer

Board Member
Dr Joos Meyer, who joined the JFF Board in 2023, is an Accredited Ophthalmology Trainee with a diverse educational background and a strong focus on improving eye care. As a board member of the John Fawcett Foundation, he is committed to contributing to its mission and aims to apply his clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and innovative thinking to aid the organisation’s work in sight restoration and blindness prevention.

Dr Meyer earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Western Australia in 2013. Before this, he achieved First Class Honours in his Bachelor of Medical Sciences in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in 2012. Dr Meyer has demonstrated leadership in several roles. He served as the Junior Representative of the RANZCO Trainee Representative Group, the Treasurer of the WA Ophthalmic Registrar Society, and a Clinical Tutor at the University of Western Australia. He was also the President of the Resident Medical Officer Society at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Founder and CEO of PRYMD Labs LLC. Dr Meyer is an active member of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association, the Australian Medical Association Western Australia, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Focused on innovation, Dr. Meyer co-founded Eyeballs Made Easy, an e-learning platform for medical students, and One Right Eye, a digital 3D model eye for patient education. He has also carried out research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Lions Eye Institute.

Drs. I Gusti Made Bagiadi, MSi

Supervisor
Pak Bagiadi is Supervisor of the Yayasan Sayangi Bali and Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan, as well as Yayasan John Fawcett Indonesia.

He has a long background of government service in Bali (1986-2017) including the Administration Chief and Secretary of the Social Department, Chief of Social Organisation, and Chief of Archives and Libraries. He currently works with the Community Water Sanitation Project in Bali.

Gede Bingin

I Nyoman Wardhana

Secretary, John Fawcett Foundation – Indonesia (2016 – present) Projects Manager, Bali office (2008 – present) 

Nyoman comes from Jimbaran, Bali and has been working with the Foundation since 1994. He graduated in Economics from the University of Warmadewa, Bali, in 1993 and held the position of Cashier and Assistant Accountant at the Saraswati Restaurant and Villa, Nusa Dua from 1993 to August 1994. In September 1994 he commenced working with the Foundation’s Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project as Project Administrator located in the BKMM where five of the Foundation’s staff were situated. The Project was essentially run from BKMM at that time. When the ABMEC (Australia Bali Memorial Eye Centre) was opened the five JFF staff moved from BKMM to the new location, and Komang continued in the position of Project Administrator until JFF withdrew from ABMEC in 2008. Since 2008 Komang has been working in the Bali headquarters of the Foundation, initially as Projects Manager, reporting to the Senior Projects Manager, and since mid-2016 being responsible for the Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project. 

Ni Gusti Ayu Susilawati

Treasurer, John Fawcett Foundation – Indonesia (2005 – present) Financial Manager, Bali office (2005 – present)

Susilawati (Susi) originates from Tabanan, Bali. Susi qualified with a Bachelor of Accounting (SE) at Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, in 2013. She has been working in the accounting field since 1999, and joined the Foundation as Accountant in 2005.  Susi holds the position of Treasurer on the Board of JFF Indonesia, and is the Financial Manager of the Indonesian Foundation, where she has overall responsibility for finances in the Bali office of JFF. She is responsible for the reporting and controlling of the financials, budgeting and taxation. She also assists with the audit of the foundation and ensures the Foundation’s employment conditions are updated in line with Government manpower regulations.

JFF UK

Wendy Gough

Trustee
Wendy Gough is the wife of the late Jeremy Hope, the founder of JFF(UK). Wendy has been involved in charity work since the death of her son from cancer in 1998.

Wendy used to have her own UK-registered charity, educating school students on early signs and how to detect cancers. She met John Fawcett and his team on several occasions during her regular yearly visits to Bali at her own expense and has always been extremely impressed with the work of JFF.

James Mason

Trustee
James Mason lives in St Albans, UK and was a close friend of the late Jeremy Hope, the Founder of JFF (UK), and his wife, Wendy Gough

His wife, Anita and son Adam have both visited the John Fawcett Foundation. James, a UK citizen, is a retired insurance executive. Recently, the UK banking arrangements were altered which required in excess of 50% of Trustees of UK-registered charities that operated overseas to be resident within the UK. James, being very familiar with the John Fawcett Foundation and the work of JFF(UK) in supporting this humanitarian effort, agreed to be co-opted as a Trustee to satisfy the requirements of the UK Bank.

Jamie Hope

Trustee
Jamie Hope is the son of the late Jeremy Hope, the Founder of JFF (UK). He visited JFF and met John Fawcett when he spent three months travelling through Indonesia and greatly admires the work that the Foundation carries out.

Jamie has other charitable interests and is Trustee of a charity that his great great grandfather founded in the United Kingdom. He is the Managing Director of Maskells, a very successful high-end London property company.

In Indonesia over 4 million people are needlessly blind. Around 65% of these people cannot access specialist medical treatment.

It offers its assistance to Indonesian citizens in the lower socio-economic group free of charge and without religious, political or ethnic consideration.
